Happy 6 Month Birthday Megan! Megan's Month 5 and 6

Happy half birthday Megan!  We're so glad you are in our family:)

I started writing this after Megan's 5 month check up.  I'm hoping to get it out around her 6th month check.  We'll see how that goes.

Megan's 5 month check up was February 1st.  Here are the stats:

weight: 15 lb 14 oz (75%)
length: 25 inches (52%)
head circumference: 16.5 inches (56%)

Megan is doing well.  We were given the go ahead to start her on solid foods.  We are also going to have her drink some prune juice to help her be more regular.

Megan has had a big month developmentally in January.  Here are a few of the happenings:

  • Celebrated her 4 month birthday by rolling from her tummy to her back.  The first time was a bit of a surprise to her!  She continued rolling over this way for a week and showed off her new skill to grandma, mom, dad, sister and physical therapist.
  • The next week, Megan rolled from her back to her tummy.  For awhile, every time we would put her on her back, it is like there was something in her head that went "on back, must roll to tummy" and she'd kick up her legs and over she would go.  Once she was on her tummy, she remembered that she didn't like being on her tummy.  She seemed to have forgotten that she knew how to roll tummy to back and would fuss until someone would take pity on her and roll her back to her back.  She would then roll back to her tummy....

  • The next week, Megan decided she wasn't into rolling at all.  Sitting and standing are much more her thing.  When we have her on her back, she lifts up her head and tries to sit up.  She can sit briefly on her own.  She loves standing up and takes advantage of every opportunity to do so.  Many times when we are burping her, she will push herself up to standing.

Tripod sit:

    Standing at the tub:
  •  We are introducing Megan to her feet.  She is a bit stiff, so it's easier for her to grab her pants than her feet:

  • Other interests include blowing bubbles, sitting in her bouncy seat and grabbing toys.  She is very smiley and talkative.  She loves to laugh as well.  One night in January when we were having our scripture study, Sarah decided to share her scriptures with Megan.  She laid down on the floor and showed Megan the scriptures.  For some unknown reason, Megan found this hilarious and started to laugh and laugh and laugh.  Sarah joined in and the two of them laughed for a good bit.  When Megan gets old enough to talk, we'll have to ask her what is so funny about Jacob 5.

6th month check stats on March 4th appointment:

weight:  17 lb 4 oz (75%)
length:  26 inches (60%)
head circumference: 16.75 inches (55%)

Megan is doing well.  She does have a yeast infection due to the antibiotics she was on, so we will be treating that.  Developmentally, she is right where she should be.  Go Megan!
Some highlights of February:

  • Megan is in the oral stage.  She sticks everything she can into her mouth--toys, fingers, bibs, the strap of the baby carrier, Matthew's feet.  There is also lots of drooling going on.  This is how we often see her:

  • She really enjoys grabbing toys and playing with them (and sticking them in her mouth).
Here she is with her dog Spunky (photo courtesy of Sarah):

Grabbing toy on floor gym:

  • We always know when Megan has had a good nap because she will smile really big, move her arms and legs and make very happy sounds.
  • Megan babbles a lot.  We hear all sorts of sounds come out of her.  She will shriek with joy when she is excited about something.  She makes a lot of guttural sounds as well.  It is obvious that she likes experimenting with her voice.
  • Megan has started noticing Matthew.  A lot.  She will reach for whatever part of him is closest to her--his head, feet, hands, etc.  She will also try to stick it in her mouth if she can.  This is especially true of his feet, which seem a better size to go in the mouth than his head.
Demonstrating that Matthew's head doesn't fit well in Megan's mouth:

Trying to comfort Matthew:

  •  Megan started solids on March 1st.  She LOVES it!  Oatmeal is her food of choice.  There is no hesitation on her part to eat it up.  She anxiously awaits each bite:)

Yummy oatmeal:

"I wonder what this new toy is.  I should stick it in my mouth!"

  • Megan loves to play peekaboo.  She will get the hugest smile on her face and often start to giggle.  So much fun!
  • Megan has decided to roll again.  She primarily rolls from her back to her tummy over her left arm.  We are working with her on rolling other ways as well.  She has started rolling over onto her tummy in her crib.  Then she'll fuss because she doesn't want to be on her tummy.
  • Megan has a huge smile that lights up her whole face.  So much fun to see!
