Megan had her three year check up this week. She is doing well over all. Yeah!
The doctor thinks she likely has seasonal allergies due to a combination of factors (pretty bad keratosis polaris {this is the medical term for the bumps all over her skin}, wheezing, coughs, lingering colds, how her eyes and nose look, etc). I'm not at all surprised--I figured she has seasonal allergies. We're seeing if giving her an antihistamine every day for a couple weeks helps with the symptoms.
We may have her speech evaluated to see if she qualifies for speech therapy. She is talking more all the time so we don't have any real concerns there; it's more about the enunciation of the words. The doctor said people not including family should be able to understand 75% of what she says at this age, which I don't think is the case. So we will see how she progresses in the next little bit and then decide.
Weight: 28.8 pounds (~30%)
Height: 37.25 inches (~60%)

Trip to the Zoo
We took a trip to the zoo on Labor Day. Megan loves Curious George. So does Matthew. Whenever we read the end of Curious George where it says what a nice place the zoo is for George to live, Megan asks to go to the zoo. This isn't exactly prime zoo season around here, seeing how as it is still over 100 every day. But she asks a lot and so we decided to make the trek. We got there right when it opened for members (8 a.m.) and headed straight for the African trail, which is the least shaded part of the zoo, and worked our way around the zoo from there. We stayed about 3 hours. It was definitely hot by the time we left, but it made it a bit more bearable. And we did enjoy our time. We saw lions and tigers and bears, oh my! The kids enjoyed splashing around at Yakulla Caverns, a water play area with a cave and a couple of slides. And Megan even found George! Hooray! So it was a successful trip:)
Sarah took most of these photos. She had the camera for a lot of the visit and just wanted to keep taking pictures of everything she saw. I think we may have a budding photographer!

The bighorn sheep. It was cool to see them up on the hill in the distance.
(After seeing these pictures, I showed Sarah how zoom worked. That is good information to have!)
We saw the tiger roaming around.
Sarah and Matthew made friends with a baboon.
A couple other baboon shots.
Some gerenuk. It even looks like there is a two-headed one.
Tortoises.
Squirrel monkeys.
Megan finding George:)
We saw Luka, the baby Andean bear, climbing around in the trees. Don't worry--his mama is right below him.
Lots of turtles and fish. (U counted over 80 turtles!)
Matthew's schedule
Every week, we review the family schedule. This week when we asked Matthew what he had going on during the week, he said, "Wednesday trash.......Friday trash." Guess who likes watching for the trash (or recycling) man???
As a side note, the pictures on the side of the trash/recycling trucks were drawn by local elementary school kids. The one on our trash truck was drawn by a girl at our church. It's a pretty cool picture if you ask me.

Megan's Happy Today!
Today was Megan's "Happy Today." (That's what Megan says for "Happy Birthday.") She's been talking about it for quite awhile and was super excited. If you asked her what she wanted, she said, "Tinker Bell." When asked what she wanted to eat, she said, "Cake." She would say, "Happy Today!" all the time. Yesterday, when I asked her how old she was, she said, "2." And when I asked how old she'd be tomorrow, she said, "3!"
So how was her birthday? That's what this post is about.
The day started at the somewhat reasonable hour of 6:45 a.m. Since Megan and Matthew have been getting up by 5 or 5:30 a.m. somewhat regularly, this was a welcome start to the day. She got to wear her favorite Rapunzel (aka Tangled) shirt. Her first gift was a Winnie the Pooh "Happy Birthday!" balloon (picked out by Matthew and daddy). She loved it and was pointing out who was on it (Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet).
After getting Sarah to school and eating breakfast, Megan enjoyed a fun day at home. She and Matthew played together a lot. She got to see the trash man come. She had a jam session on the guitar. She watched Rio and had popcorn for lunch. And she took some phone calls. It was cute to see her talk to others and tell them about her day.
In celebration of her birthday and against her mother's advice, she opted to skip her nap. This may have resulted in a few meltdowns in the evening, but hey, it's her birthday and she can cry if she wants to!

She was a big help with getting dinner (pancakes and watermelon). Yum!
Before opening presents.
With her presents. She got a Tinker Bell doll, 2 Tinker Bell shirts, a personalized "Little Mermaid" book, a Dora book, a My Little Pony playset, Tinker Bell earrings, a purse and nail polish. And some stickers. And the balloon. So much fun stuff!
Showing off her Tinker Bell doll and purse. The purse says, "M is for Me." It works out great since she and Matthew call Megan "Me." (sounds like the first syllable of "Megan")
Megan's pink toe nails. As soon as she opened her nail polish, she asked to have her toe nails painted. And she was very nice and shared with her sister.
With her birthday cake. She got the candle out in one blow.
She was so excited about the cake. I made it yesterday morning and when I asked her what she wanted for lunch yesterday, she said, "Cake." And that's pretty much what she wanted to eat ever since then. But she had to wait until tonight to eat it.
Well, she mostly waited. As you can see from this side of the cake, Megan sampled the cake to make sure it passed inspection. It did.
Megan eating her cake. She must have liked it--she ate two pieces! Must be her birthday.
So definitely a stellar day for Megan. I bet she'll even want another one next year:)
Jam session
What better thing to do on a lazy summer morning than have a jam session on the guitar? It's really cute to listen to them sing along to the songs they are playing.
Dinner Conversation
The following is part of our actual dinner conversation from last night. Enjoy!
U: Sarah, the rest of the tomatoes are yours.
S: I don't want them all.
M: Eat them. They are good for your prostate. {pause} Actually, you don't have a prostate.
{We had a coworker who ate tomatoes and would tell us it was good for his prostate.}
S: Do Megan and Matthew have them?
M: Megan doesn't have one either, but Matthew does.
S: Is it because we're adopted?
M: (Laughing hard) Mommy doesn't have a prostate either.
S: (to M) Are you adopted too?
M: (laughing harder) If a stranger looked at you, Megan and Matthew, what would he say was different about you and Megan versus Matthew?
S: Um... We don't have a prostate?
At this point there is much laughing and repeating of the above lines.
S: I know! We all have brown hair!
M: Daddy has a prostate too.
U: And I have brown hair, so that can't be it.
S: We have sharp teeth?!?
M: Does Matthew have sharp teeth?
S: I don't know.
M: (joking) Have him bite you.
S: Okay! (Proceeds to have him bite her finger) That didn't hurt. (Has Megan bite her finger.) Ow! Can I see your teeth Mom?
M: Ahh.
S: Sharp teeth!
Can I see your teeth Dad?
U: Ahh.
S: Not sharp!
Not having a prostate must mean your teeth are sharp!
(five minutes later)
S: Oh I know! We're all girls!
M: Right!
All of us, including Sarah, got a lot of laughs out of this conversation. It also does a good job showing how you can prove what you are trying to prove (like girls have sharp teeth and boys don't).
