New England Days 1 & 2: Trip to NYC, Central Park, Midtown

Over the kids' Fall Break, we headed to NYC and New England to see part of the country we didn't make it to on sabbatical last year. We were excited about seeing fall colors as well.

Our plane to Newark.

Me, Matthew and Megan at the airport. Matthew and Megan are showing the toy planes they were given by some airport workers.

We ate dinner in Newark while waiting for the shuttle to our hotel.

Sarah enjoyed her Chinese food.

Matthew sleeping in the biggest bed with his eye mask on.

The skyline of Manhattan in the background. There are two distinct concentrations of tall buildings: one on the southern tip and one near midtown.

Heading down to the Lincoln Tunnel.

After dropping our bags off at our hotel, we headed to Central Park. I remember enjoying wandering through Central Park when my family visited when I was in high school. It is very different than the surrounding area.

A mushroom! This was the first of many such discoveries.

Matthew and U playing chess at the Chess & Checkers House.

Onto a game of Mancala.

We stopped by the temple.

Megan showcases the Beehive on the ground by the doors to the temple.

Megan liked the leaves in the temple's planters.

Megan showing some of the leaves she picked up. She loved picking up leaves, sticks and rocks throughout our trip.

The kids enjoyed playing in one of the playgrounds in Central Park. While we were here, a huge procession of motorcycles went by. We are not sure what it was for, but it went on and on and on.

Matthew peeks out the window of a fort.

Hanging Sarah with Matthew grabbing her hands.

Close up of Sarah.

I think she prefers being upside down....

Imagine mosaic in the Strawberry Fields section of the park.

Matthew enjoyed climbing around on the rocks.

We ate some lunch in Sheep Meadows.

U participated in a street show.

Beautiful artwork in the Bethesda Arcade.

We wandered around the Ramble a bit. It was an easy place to get lost and it definitely didn't seem like you were in NYC.

Look what Megan found. (See below for inside the tree.)

Megan with a stream.

Matthew conquered the hill.

Me and Matthew on a beautiful bridge.

Some nice scenery. If I lived in NYC, I'd spend a fair bit of the time in Central Park!

Nice scene with midtown Manhattan in the background.
The American Museum of Natural History.

Inside the lobby of the museum. We stopped in briefly to use the facilities.

With a cavalry officer we saw on our way to dinner.

St. Patrick's Cathedral

We visited the Rockefeller Center.

A few shots from Times Square.

Panoramic of Times Square. There are so many people!

Carnegie Hall. Our hotel was half a block from here.
