San Diego Zoo

Monday morning, Megan, Matthew and Me packed up the van and headed to the San Diego Zoo. October is Kids Free month in San Diego so we only needed to buy one ticket. We headed to the guided bus tour right when the zoo opened which gave us a good overview of the zoo.

A few highlights of our day:

-Watching a bufflehead bird being chased by another bird. It was relentless in its attack (it would dive under the water and charge) and did not stop until the bufflehead left the area.

-Enjoying the birds in the many aviaries.

-Watching red rufted lemurs play with each other.

Matthew and Megan on the guided zoo tour. We were on the upper level of a double decker bus.

Polar bear exploring its enclosure.

California Condor

Peacock strutting around the park.

Hey Matthew!

We rode the Skyfari Tram to the back corner of the park in the white-fronted bee eater car

View of Balboa Park on our ride

We learned a lot about polar bears. For instance, they can smell a seal 20 miles away. They eat about anything we eat. Including us. The favorite food of the polar bears at the zoo is roasted oyster.

I spotted some seals!

Penguins! Some are sitting on eggs.

We enjoyed watching this gelada at the window. Maybe it was doing a meditation.

A couple pictures of some of the colorful birds in the African aviary exhibit. There were also little yellow birds that chased each other around. It was like there was a big race going on.

Cute Matthew and Megan Koalas

Matthew and Megan enjoyed climbing on the gorilla statues.

What colorful birds! (In the Owens aviary)

The Malayan tiger was pacing and growling.

Around 12:30, there was some distant thunder and a light smattering of rain. Megan was very concerned and decided this meant we needed to leave right away. We did not leave and are happy to report that there was no more rain or thunder.

Megan's hat (which was Me's hat when Me was in high school so quite old) broke so she got a new hat from the zoo.

After leaving the zoo, we drove to Legoland, enjoying the views of the ocean along the way. Matthew helped navigate which was nice as there was a fair bit of traffic.
